By 2024, DeSantis will have only 2 years left during which he can be Governor of FL. If he does not run in 2024 for President or run as Trump's VP, he will be out of the political spotlight for two years by 2028.
Also, he would have the challenge of running against whoever is Trump's VP in 2028 - a precarious position as running against Trump's VP he must run against Trump's agenda or competence in carrying out that agenda.
So practically speaking, DeSantis had no choice but a White House run in 2024 either as VP or President if the White House is his ambition.
In my opinion, his clearest path to the presidency in 2028 would be as Trump's VP in 2024 should Trump decide to run.
